BOOK DONATIONS
Your book/CD/DVD donations are what fund critical library programs. To ensure your generosity has the maximum impact, please review our donation guidelines below. By following these guidelines, you will help us more efficiently process your donations and reduce the costs associated with handling unsellable items.
WE GLADLY ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING BOOKS, DVD’S & CD’S that are gently used and suitable for resale.
- Fiction and non fiction – hard and soft cover
- Recent textbooks – less than 10 years old
- Children’s and young adult books
- Antique or collectible books – Call us at (707) 253-4614 for more information.
- Audiobooks on CD in original cases
- DVD’s and CD’s in original cases
We accept the above donations individually in our donation bins, in cardboard boxes (up to 18″ x 18″ x 24″) or paper or cloth bags. Our volunteers cannot handle any larger containers – full of books they are too heavy!
WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE A DONATION. Once you have made sure what you have to donate fits into the guidelines above, what do you do now?
- Place your donations in the donation bins at the northeast corner of the library
- If we are open for business, you may be asked to place your donations on carts provided or, if needed, volunteers can help your unload your donations.
- If your donation is more than 5 boxes, please contact Book Sale Manager, Bruce Taylor at (707)253-4614 to make arrangements to drop them off or we may be able to pick them up from you. Please do not bring a large donation to drop off at the library without making arrangements in advance. Our space is severely limited and sometimes we don’t have room for many boxes of donations.
ITEMS WE CANNOT ACCEPT – We value your support and thoughtfulness, however there are certain items we cannot accept as they incur disposal costs or expose our volunteers to environmental risks.
- Books that are dirty, moldy, mildewed, soiled , water damaged or heavily worn – especially those stored for extended period of time. In other words, would you buy the item you are donating?
- Encyclopedias or reference sets
- Magazines or journals
- Out dated textbooks – over 10 years old
- Condensed books such as Reader Digest sets
WHY THESE GUIDELINES?
Our donors are the source of what we resell to raise funds to support library programs. In the past, we have accepted most items and sorted through them to find those suitable for resale. Those items not fit for resale still raise funds by being turned over to a recycler. However, these sources are now very limited and we do not have the space or ability to recycle all unsalable items. Spending significant space and resources disposing these items reduces what we can devote to preparing those items we can sell. In addition, handling dirty, moldy or mildewed items poses a significant risk to our volunteers who process every item donated. WE HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND THESE GUIDELINES AND WHY WE ASK YOU TO FOLLOW THEM.
MONETARY DONATIONS
The funds we raise by selling donated books and other materials support various programs at the Napa County Library. Examples of these programs can be found on our About Page. Specific information about what Childrens programs we currently sponsor can be found on our News Page in the article titled “Where The Money Goes!”. If you are interested in supporting the library and its programs through the Friends of the Library but don’t have any books to donate or if you want to do more than donate books to sell, we encourage you to make a monetary donation. We appreciate any and all donations and encourage members and non-members alike to help us with our mission to enhance the public’s experience at the Napa library. And it is so easy… just click on the Make a Monetary Donation button on the right hand side of any page on our site.
